When we chose the title Macrowikinomics for our latest book, we felt that it captured the essence of what the book was about: using wikinomics principles to rethink and reboot a wide range of ailing institutions in the economy and society. Put another way, Macrowikinomics seemed (at first) to sum up the promise of a new model of collaboration and social production that goes way beyond the world business to affect the modus operandi of virtually every institution in society, including government, education, health care, science, finance and international diplomacy.
The subtitle, Rebooting Business and the World was a call to action. After all, our goal was not simply to write a well-received book, but to inform and ignite new collaborations across disciplines, sectors and borders that could help the world grapple with a lengthening list of social and environmental challenges.
We received enormously positive feedback on the contents of the book, but it turns out that there is less enthusiasm for our title. Many readers, friends and colleagues encouraged us to find a new, more provocative title—one that would make our work accessible to new audiences. Some suggested that we needed a title that could capture the imagination audiences that had not yet heard of or embraced Wikinomics. This untapped readership could stand to benefit the most from the book’s insights and case studies, they said.
We now agree that our readers, friends and colleagues are right.
The book does need a more provocative and accessible title. And with our publisher Penguin Portfolio set to launch a new paperback edition, the timing for a change is right. Once again, we feel compelled to call on the wisdom of crowds to help us come up with a brand new title and subtitle.
