“The future is not something to be predicted, it is something to be achieved”

Magnetic quotes of this nature were part of the reason we were thrilled to host Don Tapscott at our TakingITGlobal offices to talk about his new book Macrowikinomics: Rebooting Business and the World with our online community members and staff. From the early stages of TakingITGlobal’s ten year journey, Don has been an advisor and mentor to us. Not only is he a dynamic thought leader and author of many books which speak to the qualities of our net generation, he also demonstrates unwavering confidence in the leadership potential of our networked generation.

Both Don and TakingITGlobal embrace the values at the core of the intelligent, networked society that Don believes we are moving towards. Don sees the current rate of change in our society to be driven by the paradigm shift between the age of the industrial revolution and the internet-enabled age of networked intelligence. This shift is driven by four forces: The net generation, the social revolution, the economic revolution and web 2.0. At the heart of this shift are five values: openness, collaboration, integrity, sharing and interdependence.

At TakingITGlobal, we strive to provide a platform to support these values in our mission to inspire, inform and involve young people through technology to unleash the power of individuals as a force for good. TIG’s online platform ( provides a space for the exploration of these values and their repercussions. We hope to enable action to reform and reorganize the sectors of society which are not functioning optimally; we see our social network as a method for social production to grow a globally-minded socially responsible society of citizens.

This leap between social networking and social production is one of the most interesting shifts we are seeing in society. Almost everything we produce or enable through our platform could be considered an act of social production, and it’s highly rewarding to enable and guide this process through our network of millions of youth leaders.

TIG strives to bring these messages spotlighted by Don to young people around the globe as well as to key decision makers in business and government. Because of this, it was highly rewarding to have Don interact with our team and membership given his role as a champion of our connected generation who firmly believes in the work we are doing to unleash the power of individuals.

Many see the current global financial and ecological crises as the growing pains of our emerging globalized world. We choose to see them as urgent challenges which underline the unique position of our generation. Instead of interpreting them as blocking us from achieving the future we want, we recognize these challenges as a call to action to create the world we want to live in, as highlighting the importance of sharing and spreading these ideas, and as recognizing the strengths of our generation and acting upon them is demanded of those of us who hear this call.

We ask ourselves: How can we best contribute to global problem-solving in an increasingly complex networked world? We invite you to join us and see how youth around the world are imagining their futures.
